David McCallum
Scottish actor David McCallum may be better known for his acting career rather than his musical endeavors but I’m in love with his eight year stint with Capitol Records (1960-1968). Like some other television and motion picture actors of the day, McCallum gained a record deal through his notoriety as an actor. Though, instead of going straight into pop, this classically trained musician wrote and played groovy, cinematic, instrumental songs that blended classical oboe, string and english horn sounds with modern guitar and drums. I listen to his music when I need help getting out of a writer’s block or an artistic rut. It’s groovy (hate to overuse the word but it really is) danceable, easy listening.
*Recognize “The Edge”? It was most recently sampled in Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” in 2001
